Yes, you do need an autoresponder. However, if you are going to get serious about Internet Marketing, wouldn't you WANT to have a way to put many of your tasks on auto pilot?
I cannot agree that you feel you MUST subscribe to a third party autorespnder. Bryan clearly sates you can use any other service, even host your own, but you may need a bit of assistance setting it up and he even offers to help.

Furthermore, I agree wholeheartedly that it is geared toward beginners. It has value for those of us with more advanced skilss, but any beginner can have a website, with opt-in page up and online in less than 5 minutes.
